WHAT IS IVF
As the word goes, IVF (in vitro fertilisation) means off-body fertilisation, “laboratory fertilisation”. The eggs are removed from her ovaries with a procedure called egg collection and fertilised by the sperm in the laboratory in a special “saucer” – petri dish. This results in fertilised eggs (zygotes), which are placed in incubation ovens with specific culture conditions. They then develop into embryos. After 2-6 days, the best ones are selected, that is, the ones most likely to be implanted, and placed in the woman’s uterus, in a procedure called embryo transfer. Any excess embryos are frozen for future use.
